Need a civil case record in Lenawee County? Start with the clerk of the court handling the filing. A Lenawee County civil docket lists each step of a case, from the first filing to motions, hearings, and the final outcome. A docket search shows which court holds the file and what has happened so far. The statewide court search covers eligible records, and the local clerk can confirm a court date or provide an official copy. Entries change as new papers arrive and hearing dates move. Basic case histories are public, though some records and document images carry access limits.

Lenawee County Civil Court Split

Know which court you are in before you search. Lenawee County splits civil work three ways. The docket you pull depends on the dollar amount and the subject of the suit. General civil suits under the District Court limit, small claims, claim and delivery, land-contract forfeiture, dangerous-dog cases, abandoned vehicles, and summary possession all run through the 2A District Civil Department. Claims above $25,000 go to the 39th Circuit Court. Probate covers estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and similar proceedings. Family Division records follow their own access rules.

So check the amount and the subject first. A District docket is a different court record than a Circuit civil case. One more wrinkle matters: a District decision can be appealed to Circuit on a typewritten verbatim transcript or a settled record, with no new trial. The 39th Circuit Court page is the county's own source on Circuit jurisdiction and clerk procedure.

Inside a Lenawee County Civil Docket

A Lenawee County civil docket is the dated register of actions behind a case. Expect the court, the case number, and the category. The filing date, the assigned judge, the parties, and the public status round out the header. From there the docket records events as they happen: a complaint, a summons, proof of service, an answer, a counterclaim, a motion, a response, a scheduling order, a settlement, a judgment, an appeal, or closure. Read each label as an event. None of them is a result by itself.

Case headerCourt, number, category, filing date, status, and assigned judge where shown.
Party rolesPlaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, business, attorney, or representative.
Filing sequenceComplaint, service, answer, motion, response, order, judgment, or satisfaction entry.
Setting detailsDate, time, room, judge, hearing type, and any continuance or reset.
Access indicatorPublic, redacted, sealed, confidential, nonpublic, or unavailable as the record permits.

Take motions. An entry saying a motion was filed does not say it was granted or denied; only the entry or the order gives that. A satisfaction is different again. It is a later post-judgment entry, and it never erases the complaint, the judgment, or the case history before it.

Lenawee County Civil Filing Channels

Filing works differently depending on the court. The Civil Department's electronic filing went live in November 2023, and listed 2A District civil filings run through MiFILE/TrueFiling. Treat that as a filing path only. It is not a public search of every document. For case lookup later, you still go through MiCOURT with the case number the court assigned.

The 39th Circuit Court takes the opposite approach. It has no e-filing and accepts no pleadings by email. Circuit papers go by mail or hand delivery. That split matters for anyone reading a Lenawee County civil docket. Papers may have entered through different processes even though both courts sit behind the same MiCOURT layer when a public history exists.

The county listing on the MiFILE available-courts page shows which courts accept electronic filings there.

Civil Case Types on the Docket

Case type tells you what a civil docket is really about. District records in Lenawee County cover several types. They include small claims, general civil claims, claim and delivery, summary proceedings, land-contract forfeiture, dangerous-dog matters, and abandoned-vehicle matters. Circuit dockets take the bigger civil claims. Divorce and injunction work and other matters within Circuit jurisdiction land there too. One caution. A visible statewide category does not make Probate or family records ordinary general-civil files. Read the case type before you assume where a filing belongs.

Go past the label and open the record itself. A public case history can list every party and docket entry, while the underlying document image stays restricted from view.

Lenawee County Civil Docket Entries

A Lenawee County civil docket uses a few terms with distinct effects. The complaint begins the claim. Proof of service shows that a complaint or summons was served. An answer replies to a complaint. A counterclaim lets the responding party assert a claim of their own. A scheduling order then controls the later steps in the case. The judgment is the enforceable decision or final order. It stays subject to appeal and other rules.

Default
A failure to respond or appear that may support a default process under the court rules.
Garnishment
A post-judgment process listed in the 2A civil fee materials with distinct forms and fees.
Execution
A post-judgment process event that should not be read as proof money was collected.
Satisfaction
A later filing or entry showing a judgment was paid or otherwise satisfied.

Note: A Lenawee County civil docket may lump related or consolidated matters into one entry. Track each case number on its own so nothing gets lost.

Civil Docket Settings and Hearings

Look at the summons, notice, subpoena, or order first. The original notice controls whatever a Lenawee County civil setting shows. Then check the County Court Schedules page and the matching MiCOURT display. A calendar row for a civil docket can list a date, time, room, judge, and hearing type. A party name and a time can help you find that row. Neither one tells you the claim, the result, or whether the hearing is still on.

Continuances work differently than you might expect. A reset may appear several ways. It can show a changed date, a new setting, or a history entry. It may be an order, or nothing at all until the calendar updates. So a blank calendar is not a cancellation. Write down the former date, the new date, and where you confirmed it. The public display and the case history can disagree. Then call the matching court and ask the clerk which setting stands.

Civil Docket Access Rules

Michigan court case records are governed by MCR 8.119, not by county administrative FOIA rules. The rule requires an access method for public electronically maintained records, subject to its conditions. Even so, some records stay closed. Statutes, court rules, court orders, and redaction rules can close off a case or a document. One more distinction matters. A public case-history line and a public document image are separate questions. The first does not promise the second. Family, juvenile, protective, and some probate matters carry special limits. Protected personal identifying information may be absent or redacted. When you contact the clerk, identify the court and the case number. Inspect the open history. Ask whether a public redacted copy, register of actions, or other access process is available.
